Tangará da Serra Celebrates Forest Protection Day with a Model of Environmental Preservation

Publicado em

There is no denying that protecting forests means securing a sustainable future for all. After all, forests are cradles of biodiversity, home to countless species, and sources of essential resources for life.

This July 17, as Brazil celebrates Forest Protection Day, Tangará da Serra stands out as a positive example of balance between development and environmental preservation. Located in a strategic transition zone between the Cerrado and the Amazon Rainforest, the municipality hosts one of the most significant conserved native forest areas in the Central-West region.

The spotlight is on the Juba I and II Hydroelectric Complex and the Graça Brennand Small Hydropower Plant (PCH). Together, these energy-generating units are responsible for preserving nearly 10,000 hectares of native vegetation, forming a true ecological sanctuary amid the advancing agricultural frontier. The area is characterized by rich biodiversity and nearly untouched ecosystems that play a crucial role in maintaining water resources and local wildlife.

In addition to dense vegetation and protected ecological corridors, the hydroelectric plants play a key role in safeguarding the Juba River—a major tributary of the Sepotuba River and one of the main contributors to the Paraguay River. The preservation of riparian forests and the responsible management of surrounding areas help maintain water quality, soil stability, and the continuity of the region’s natural cycles.

According to environmental experts, Tangará da Serra is becoming a model of sustainable development. “What we see in this area is modern environmental management that combines clean energy generation with the preservation of local biomes. It’s a reference for the entire country,” says Siloé Oliveira, a biologist and environmental manager at Brennand Energia, the company responsible for the Juba hydroelectric complex.

While other regions of Brazil struggle with deforestation and rapid degradation, Tangará da Serra reaffirms its commitment to the environment and to future generations. On this Forest Protection Day, the municipality not only celebrates but also proves that it is possible to preserve and prosper at the same time.
